Two days after suffering a heart attack while at a fire, a Madisonville firefighter died Friday afternoon.

According to a Regional Medical Center spokeswoman, Capt. Kenneth Wayne Taylor, 49, died at 4:50 p.m. Friday at the hospital.

Taylor, a 26-year veteran of the Madisonville Fire Department, was one of 13 firefighters called to the scene at 1190 W. Noel at 8:34 a.m. Wednesday. Taylor was helping to pull hose when he suffered the attack.

Firemen at the scene gave Taylor CPR, and he was taken to Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

The fire gutted the back bedroom and caused heavy smoke damage to the rest of the upstairs apartment. There were no other injuries reported.

" We lost a friend and we lost a great firefighter," said Maj. Bill Mattingly, a shift commander at Madisonville Fire Department.

Taylor served as shift commander when the commander was off duty.

Fire Chief Tom Williams said Taylor attained the rank of captain about three years ago after serving as a lieutenant for several years before that. Williams worked with Taylor for most of Taylor’s career.

" He was the best we had, as nice a guy as anyone. He would do anything for you," Williams said. "He was really well liked in the department and the community.

" He always did his job and did what he needed to do."

Taylor was married to Brenda Taylor. Funeral arrangements are pending with Barnett-Strother Funeral Home of Madisonville.
