short post from NY daily news
Vincent Morello was remembered by his firefighter brother, Marc Morello, and his father, retired Battalion Chief John Morello, for his decision to work Sept. 11, though his shift had ended the night before.
"Parents are not supposed to eulogize their children," John Morello told mourners in Trinity Church in Middle Village, Queens. But "when we go to his house each day and take his children to school, we see him in their faces." Marc Morello noted that his 34-year-old brother had been a FDNY mechanic on Randalls Island for 12 years before becoming a firefighter 18 months ago — and taking a pay cut in the process. Marc Morello said his brother was such a good repair man that when he bought his house, his brother came to help fix it up. "My house came out beautiful, thanks to him," he said. Another firefighter, Mike O'Neill, said his colleagues would sometimes call to find out when Vincent Morello worked, then would drive their wives' cars there. "Wouldn't you know that their cars would need new brakes," O'Neill said, smiling. He is survived by his wife, Debi Morello, and two children, Justin, 7, and Paige, 5. "I have millions of memories of you that flash through my mind all day, every day," his wife wrote in the program. "It is both a blessing and a curse. I have always been very proud to be your wife long before you became a firefighter." |
